Race to Dubai leader Lee Westwood believes being crowned Europe’s top golfer at the Dubai World Championship would be the icing on the cake of his best season in years.

Westwood’s victory at the Portugal Masters last week was the 30th of his career and came on the back of eight top-10 finishes in 10 tournaments, lifting him to the top of The Race to Dubai leaderboard.

The Englishman has also moved to Number 5 in the world rankings, just one place short of the position he reached in 2000 when he won 12 times in three years.

“2009 so far has been a successful year,” said the 36-year-old.

“I’ve never finished top three in two majors before, my consistency levels have been much higher and when I’ve played poorly it’s been 23rd.”

Westwood is now in pole position to achieve his immediate goal of winning the inaugural Race to Dubai which culminates at the Dubai World Championship held at Jumeirah Golf Estates from November 19-22.

“If I were to win The Race to Dubai that would be the icing on the cake,” he said.

“There is still a major missing, but I’m improving all the time and April (US Masters) can’t come quick enough.”
