Rory McIlroy is remaining positive about his Race to Dubai chances despite an early exit from the Volvo World Matchplay Championship in Spain.

The 20-year-old Ulsterman, currently 2nd in The Race to Dubai, rediscovered his putting touch following Thursday’s five-hole defeat to Angel Cabrera, to beat both Simon Dyson and Henrik Stenson, but it came too late to qualify for the semi-finals.
However, McIlroy took home a cheque for $150,000 for a share of fifth place to keep his dream on track and will be buoyed by the early exits of fellow Race frontrunners Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer, and Paul Casey.

“I didn’t start holing putts until today really and played well in both sessions,” he said.

“Henrik struggled and I’ll finish second in the group, so it is not too bad for The Race to Dubai.

“I did what I could today, but all the damage was done yesterday.”
