Rory McIlroy is prepared to push new Race to Dubai leader Lee Westwood all the way to the finish line after losing his place at the top of rankings.

The 36-year-old Westwood claimed a dramatic victory at the Portugal Masters to earn his first victory in more than two years and move 200,000 euros ahead in the battle to be crowned The European Tour’s top golfer.

McIlroy, whose bid for the Harry Vardon Trophy continues at next week’s World Matchplay, said:

“Lee overtook me at the weekend and I think we are playing the same tournaments in the run-in.

“It will be good to chase him all the way to the finish and I will have to play some really good golf to try and overtake him.”

Europe’s current top two will both return to action at next week’s World Match Play Championship in Spain and they will be involved in the big-money HSBC Champions event in Shanghai a week later.

With two other front-runners in The Race to Dubai, Germany’s Martin Kaymer and England’s Paul Casey, scheduled to return from lengthy injury breaks in the next fortnight, the European season is heading for a thrilling climax at the Dubai World Championship.

McIlroy added: “There are lots of other guys still in with a chance like Martin Kaymer and Paul Casey, and there are a few others just outside but can make big moves.

“I will be trying my best to get back on top.”
