McDowell currently lies 37th in The Race to Dubai rankings and is guaranteed a place at the season-ending Dubai World Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates next month when the top 60 compete for a $7.5m prize-fund.

However, the Northern Irishman, who missed the cut at last week’s Portugal Masters, admits that it has been a frustrating season for him so far this year.”

“I played poorly last week, very poorly, it’s as simple as that,” he said.

“I am not making any excuses; I just played badly, and have decided to withdraw from this week’s tournament.

“I have some work do to on my game, and plan to travel out to Singapore early at the weekend.

“My swing is a bit cold at the moment and I am going to address that before heading out to Asia.”

Apart from forming an effective partnership with compatriot Rory McIlroy at last month’s Vivendi Seve Trophy, McDowell has been unable to demonstrate the consistency which led to two victories last year and a strong performance at the Ryder Cup.

McDowell has slipped to 54th in the world rankings and he now needs a strong finish to the season to move into contention for a top 15 placing in The Race to Dubai rankings and earn a share of the additional $7.5 million prize pool.

“It’s been a mildly frustrating year for me,” he said.

“I’ve played some good golf and not got much out of it, but obviously we’ve got some interesting things going on at the moment.

“We’ve The Race to Dubai which is very exciting so I’m trying to get the head down and play well between now and then and try and finish the season strong.”
