Martin Kaymer remained upbeat about his Race to Dubai chances despite falling several shots behind rivals Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy at the half-way stage of the Dubai World Championship presented by: DP World.
The German will be crowned Europe’s number one golfer if he wins this week’s tournament on the Earth course at Jumeirah Golf Estates, but posted a second successive 71 to finish 2-under after two rounds.
“I had a good start. I was 2‑under after six holes, and then I played a little bit more solid than yesterday, but I couldn’t get the putts in the hole and that was a little frustrating,” he said.
“I’m playing okay, but I just struggled with the greens. I struggled with reading the greens. I hit good putts but I don’t know how many putts went over the lip today, so it’s kind of frustrating.
Kaymer had back-to-back successes in the Open de France ALSTOM and Barclays Scottish Open, and five other top tens this season, but knows he must raise his game even further if he is to catch current leaders Westwood and McIlroy.
“They are playing well, so obviously they belong up there,” he said. “I mean, depending on how they finish today, if I am only 6‑ or 7‑ back, I think I still have a chance. If I have a strong weekend, a good weekend. I’m not out of it yet.”
