Padraig Harrington believes the brand new Earth course is providing added drama at the Dubai World Championship presented by: DP World and believes there is a “buzz” around Jumeirah Golf Estates.
More than 22,000 spectators have poured through the gates at the halfway stage, with the number of families and young faces in the crowds creating a unique atmosphere at the event.
“There is a definite buzz here and everyone is talking about what a great event it is and how well set-up the course is,” said Harrington. “We are being so well looked after; it’s hard to remember why we are here!”
The three-time Major winner is well placed in the tournament following a second round 69 despite hitting two balls into the water for a double-bogey seven on Earth’s intriguing final hole to surrender first place to Lee Westwood.
However, Harrington believes the Greg Norman designed golf course, which is being played competitively for the first time this week, is providing a worthy test for the grand finale of The Race to Dubai.
“I think they have got it right here this week,” said Harrington. “The golf course, it gives us some opportunities, but you have some very testing holes. It’s a testing finish.
“So you are going to see guys being able to shoot low ones, and then guys who are leading the tournament, you know, not find that as easy.”
Harrington’s second round started slowly, but an eagle at seven sparked a sensational run by the Irishman, who leapt into contention with birdies on the next three holes.
“One of the leaders is going to shoot a good one today. Let’s hope it’s me and maybe they can put a little bit of distance between themselves and the pack.”
