Sergio Garcia Makes an Early Impact in The Race to Dubai by Taking the First Win in Shanghai
The early frontrunner in The Race to Dubai, Sergio Garcia was one of the first players to express his full support for the season-long competition. After starting off with a big win in Shanghai, which propelled him to World Number Two, many are predicting a breakout season for golf’s “next big thing.”
The 2008 season saw Garcia win The Players Championship in May—the richest purse in golf at the time—and claim second place finishes at the USA PGA, The European Open and the Barclays Classic, marking his most consistent season to date. But after a promising start to the new season this month with a win at the HSBC Champions in Shanghai, 2009 could be the year Garcia emerges as a champion.
The early season victory also made Garcia the leader of the inaugural Race to Dubai. Speaking after the event in Shanghai, Garcia commented on The European Tour’s new competition: “The Race to Dubai represents a real statement of intent by The European Tour and by Dubai. The Tour has clearly moved up a gear in its ability to attract the world’s best players, and Dubai has reinforced its position as a centre of world golf. I’ll definitely try to play a little bit more on my home tour to earn a chance to win the Dubai World Championship.”
