Less than 24 hours after Alvaro Quiros and Luke Donald shared the spotlight, 34 amateur teams tackled the host Earth course, Jumeirah Golf Estates at the annual Sponsors’ Day for the Dubai World Championship presented by DP World.
And while the scores were not as spectacular as those posted by new champion Quiros or World and European Number One Donald, the final event of the Dubai World Championship week was voted an overwhelming success by players and event organisers alike.
Winning the morning shotgun on a count back with a score of fourteen under par was the TNT 2 team of Chris Collins, James Pollard, Jim Wheat and Michael Rosario with the DWC 2 team in second (Jorge Areosa, Hercu Viljoen, Grant James and Mike Groger). Toshiba’s Yasuyoshi Matsunaga, Iwasuke Shimada, Shinji Taniuchi and Takashi Ejiri took third place on eleven under.
Big winners in the afternoon were the players representing Fitness First who stormed clear with a score of seventeen under par.
Like the morning winners, the Fitness First fourball of George Flooks, Mark Botha, Nick Hymar and Nathan Brown received their trophies from renowned golf coach Pete Cowen who hosted the event.
Coming home in second place on a count back on fourteen under was the Rolex 4 team of Dev Anand, Arkesh Bhatia, Rakesh Bhatia and Sharon Hall, while the Rolex 1 team (Tarek El Sakka, Nigel Pinto, Raashid Ali and Rohi Amin) took third also on fourteen under.
The Dubai World Championship Sponsors’ Day is the closing event in the grand finale to The Race to Dubai and Colin Smith, European Tour Director – International Business Development Middle East and Asia, was quick to underline the role played by the sponsors in the success of the tournament.
“The Dubai World Championship would simply not happen without the support of our key partners,” he said. “Our appreciation goes out to all of our sponsors and supporters and we look forward to continuing these partnerships over the next three years as we prepare for the 2012 DP World Tour Championship and beyond.”
Watched by more than 50,000 spectators and a global TV audience in excess of 700 million homes, the Dubai World Championship presented by DP World – staged under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Sports Council – came to a dramatic conclusion with Spain’s Alvaro Quiros lifting the trophy and event officials announcing that The Race to Dubai will continue for another three years culminating in the DP World Tour Championshin again hosted by Jumeirah Golf Estates.
