Ross Fisher could yet gatecrash The Race to Dubai party after clinching his second matchplay semi-final appearance of the season.
The 28-year-old, who started the week in 5th position in The Race to Dubai, qualified thanks to a one-hole win over India’s Jeev Milkha Singh, and now faces a massive battle against big-hitting US Masters champion Angel Cabrera.
Beaten by Paul Casey in the WGC Matchplay semi-finals in February, Fisher came close to winning the US Open and The Open Championship at Turnberry, and feels he is close to ending a 16-month drought.
With Race to Dubai leaders Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer, and Casey all crashing out at the group stage, Fisher will close the gap on his rivals significantly if he can claim his first tournament win of 2009.
“The Race to Dubai is a huge thing; a massive thing,” said Fisher.
“I’m a fair bit behind Westy, Martin Kaymer and Rory. Obviously it’s great for me that I’ve made it to the semis and they haven’t.”
